Ashanti’s Happy

Ashanti. In French, it means to sing. To Indians, it would mean peace or war, while over in Ghana, there’s an African princess called Ashanti.

To those in the dark, it might seem that the stunning R&B singer Ashanti breezed onto the music scene to instant success, thanks to her collaborations with Ja Rule and Fat Joe and her recent hit single, ‘Foolish’, all of which are riding up the Billboard charts.

“People don’t realize the struggle. They hear the song on the radio and see the video, and it looks easy, but it’s been an eight-and-a-half-year struggle, really” says Ashanti, who had a deal back then with Jive Records, home of Britney, et al. “They were a good company, but I wasn’t feeling the creative vibe from the people I was working with. Ever since then I’ve been doing my own thing, essentially.”

What does she mean by doing her own thing? She co-wrote ‘Spending Time’ for Christina Milian and Jennifer Lopez’s ‘Ain’t It Funny’ with Ja Rule, with whom she teamed up for the infectious ‘Always on Time.’

Now, Ashanti, 21, is getting offers from all over the place to songwrite, including one from Enrique Iglesias. “That’s one of the names. Optimistically, that will go down. A couple of people have been kicking some things in my ear about the lyrics, wanting me to write for them, which is a honour.”Ashanti’s ‘Foolish’ was so phenomenal so much so the release date for her LP was bumped up even though the rest of her remaining cuts were barely finished. “It’s like it’s majorly wanted,” Ashanti says. “The song is blowing up, the demand is out there. I’ve loads and loads and loads of positive feedback. Girls tell me that they all can’t believe I wrote about their lives. So, you do not want to lose the momentum at all. It’s a bona fide good feeling.”

Deliberately, the only guest on Ashanti is her label-mate Ja Rule, who co-wrote one song, ‘Leaving’. “I didn’t want to flood the album with loads of people. I wanted to stand on my own feet and prove I don’t need a lot of artistes to help me along the way.”

Her sophomore solo single ‘Happy’ which she suggested will be dropping in the next few weeks, is also about dropping defences. “It’s just a great vibing record. It’s a feel-good record, especially for the summer, and that’s where we kind of want to gear it towards. I’m talking about how you find that person and you’re searching for him and you’re just happy.”

Sparks Between Alicia Keys & Justin Timberlake?

Alicia Keys and Justin Timberlake. Are they really an item? Now, it has been reported and seen by onlookers that both Alicia and Justin may have something going on.

N’Sync’s Justin has been spotted enjoying a cosy meal with the Grammy award-winning vocalist Alicia Keys.

The pair met for lunch at a restaurant on LA’s Sunset Boulevard and they even kissed and cuddled as they left, according to tabloids.

Sources say the couple were “laughing and giggling” during lunch and the two were later seen kissing on Sunset Boulevard before Alicia was driven back to her hotel by Justin’s people.

A spokesman for N’Sync said “Justin and Alicia are just friends working in the same business.”

In other news, Alicia has shrugged off the lesbian rumours and has revealed that she had a secret boyfriend. “I’m certainly not gay. I’m seeing a man. He’s a person I’ve known for a long time. It’s all cool.”

Looks Like Emma’ll Be Saying What Took You So Long, Simon

Emma Bunton has got tongues wagging recently after she was seen flirting with Simon Webbe, who’s from Blue, just barely a week after her break-up with Jade.

The tabloids are claiming that the two sensations were intimate at Britney Spears’s ‘Crossroads’ U.K. premiere as they chatted happily in the VIP area and later sent mushy text messages (SMS) across the crowded room.

As stated earlier on Pop-music.com, the songstress for her ‘What Took You So Long’ number, dumped Jade last week after all of the constant bitter struggles mainly over her former lover and manager Simon Fuller.

According to a source “Emma is upset about splitting with Jade but thinks the best way to get over him is to get out and meet new people. She is a big flirt but she seems particularly keen on Simon because he’s just about her type. She arrived late at Britney’s party and Simon was apparently rather ecstatic to see her.”

Robbie Upset With Guy Writing Songs For Will

Robbie Williams, who’s presently away in Los Angeles, is mad that his songwriter and best lad, Guy Chambers, is penning tracks for ‘Pop Idol’ victor Will Young.

Taking a year off from music in Los Angeles, insecure Robbie is pretty much bothered that his fan base will switch and start idolising Will Young through the experienced guidance of Guy Chambers.

Guy who co-wrote many of Robbie’s smash hits and plays the keyboards in Robbie’s band, has often been described as a workaholic. He is not satisfied to just sit back while Robbie recuperates in Los Angeles. He has already penned songs for former All Saints member, Shaznay Lewis, and is now working on new material for the ‘Evergreen/Anything Is Possible’ sensation.Sources say Robbie is furious and panicking “Robbie is putting on a brave face but he is concerned he may find it difficult when he returns next year if Guy and Will have formed a strong tie. He’s very insecure like that and is not happy that Guy is a free agent and the fact that Guy wants to work while Robbie’s away.”

Robbie, as reported earlier on Pop-Music.com, is attending Alcohol Anonymous meetings every day in L.A to stay sober.

In other Robbie-related affairs, Robbie Williams will stay at EMI after news broke out last week that the record company has slashed 1,800 staff and artists as part of a wide-ranging strategy to cut costs.

Selling so far sold five million copies of his big band album ‘Swing When Your Winning’ worldwide, the ‘Rock DJ’ star has reportedly been offered GBP40 million to stay with EMI.

He’s still in discussions with bosses at the record label but it looks like he’ll sign up to do another 5 albums, according to what an EMI executive said.

Norah Jones Breaks Through

Not since Diana Krall or even Sarah MacLachlan for that matter, has a solo female soul/jazz artist created such a critical sensation in the media. I’m talking about the one and only Norah Jones. She has the potential to make being a devotee the world of smooth sounds and cardigans a very cool thing indeed.

Norah Jones, who has by the way, Miss India-worthy looks, is slowly but surely bringing her fabulous sound to an increasing audience with her major-label debut LP on Blue Note/Capitol, ‘Come Away With Me’.

What really makes Norah worthy of your investigation is merely just the way she sounds. This is what one critic had to say pertaining to Norah Jones “If quiet is the new loud, then the voice is the new power chord. And Norah Jones has a voice you’d trade your soul for. Equal parts smoke, honey, autumn and regret, it’s one of those delicious twists of nature you want to lose yourself in. She makes heartbreak sound like the most sumptuous luxury and disappointment feel like whispered sweet nothings in the middle of the night. You suspect she could sing your eviction notice and still make it all seem good.”Released on the 26th of February Stateside, the Arif Mardin-produced ‘Come Away With Me’ bowed on the Billboard’s Heatseekers chart at a peak location of No. 5 in the 16th of March issue. Norah’s debut offering also became a No. 1 hit on the Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart and moves 4 notches up to sit at No. 58 this week on The Billboard 200.

The daughter of famed Indian musician Ravi Shankar, Norah was born in Brooklyn, New York and brought up in Dallas. She has since returned to New York, where she is now based.

Norah, 22, spoke to an online UK music-zine recently “I just try to stay focused on my music and my shows. I used to be more of a piano player. Sometimes I feel I can sing better without the piano, but for now I feel comfortable doing both.”

She’s currently touring in support of “Come Away With Me.” She has dates scheduled on 12th of April in Denver, and will take to the road again in June. She’ll also be among the many artists, like Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, Ryan Adams, Lee Ann Womack, Lyle Lovett, Matchbox Twenty and more, who will all come together to celebrate Willie Nelson at his tribute concert, held at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium come 14th of April. That’ll be taped for future broadcast by cable channel A&E.

Here are Norah Jones’ upcoming tour dates:

April 3-4: West Hollywood, Calif. (House of Blues)

April 5: San Francisco (Fillmore)

April 6: Claremont, Calif. (Claremont McKenna College)

April 8: Portland, Ore. (Crystal Ballroom)

What It Feels Like To Be Madonna

The Queen of Pop, Madonna, sure looks busy and has been spending quite a bit of studio time, working on new material to a follow-up to 2000’s ‘Music’, according to a Madonna representative. No further information was presented and there is no word on when the album will surface.

That is precisely the reason why the superstar wouldn’t be able to carry out any matinee performances of the London theatre production ‘Up For Grabs’, on the 23rd of May at the Wyndham Theatre.

In additional news, it was stated that Madonna has pulled out of the new James Bond movie after insisting on being in the movie if she sang the movie’s theme song. But now, reports claim that she will not make a cameo in the film but just sing the main song for the James Bond flick, titled ‘Die Another Day’ that’ll be out sometime around Thanksgiving.

According to newspaper reports, film company MGM was taken aback hearing her news after she had earlier made demands of having a cameo role in the motion picture which also stars Halle Berry, John Cleese and Judi Dench.

The filming would simply clash with Madonna’s West End theatre debut ‘Up For Grabs’, in which she plays an art dealer.

Besides all of the above, Guy Ritchie’s film, ‘Love, Sex, Drugs And Money’ has been slammed for its violence against women, particularly wife Madonna’s character.

Joey Fatone’s Big Fat Greek Wedding

Joey Fatone in recent times took on a role in the independent film ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’, that’ll hit theatres in the US of A come 14th of April. Joey is of course one fifth of the mega successful boyband, N’Sync.

Filming his scenes at the same time N’Sync was recording their ‘Celebrity’ LP, Joey added “We are supportive of anything that anybody else does in the group. They were able to work the schedule where it was like I flew in to Toronto to shoot some of the scenes, then flew back to record.”

“Obviously N’Sync can get old or tiring after a while and you’re like, ‘I want little bit of a change,'” Joey said last week at a screening of the movie which is said to be produced by Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson. “So what do I do? Go do a movie. Be a character. Be screwy. Be silly. Whatever the case may be. And then you’re like, ‘Hoi! Now I can be creative and go back to doing writing, dancing and performing with N’SYNC.'”

Joey’s next motion picture, ‘The Bros.’, is about two suburban white males who ride into the world of hardcore rap. The flick is expected to debut at a yet-unspecified film festival later on in 2002.

Introducing Remy Shand

Critics around are singing his praises, giving glowing reviews and declaring that his are the freshest sounds ever to hit your ears. Some even say his are the perfect sounds to play while making out, especially the single, ‘Take A Message’, what with all its sexy sounding beats. His album has just only been certified Gold in Canada. So who exactly is this vocalist who’s making quite a buzz in the music scene lately and whose LP is simply a must-have?

The return of old school soul in the hearts, minds, and voices of singers like Maxwell, India.Arie, Alicia Keys and others comes as one of pop’s music most welcome surprises, Remy Shand, 23, who hails from Winnipeg, Canada.

Replacing formerly de rigueur studio gadgetry with all of his heart and his authenticity, with real instruments, the maiden album from Remy, ‘The Way I Feel’, is truly fabulous.

According to Remy “This record is purely about relationships. The topic is love. Basically, it’s four years of my feelings.”Fashioning music that is vintage/retro sounding yet original with a touch of modernity, Remy, a songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist and self-producer, attacks the boundaries of R&B, pop and alternative with his own timeless union.

Remy grew up listening to Marvin Gaye, Ann Peebles, Steely Dan, the Isley Brothers and much more, plus wrote the songs that can now be found on his debut LP at just 19 years old.

Released on the 12th of March in Canada and the United States – be sure to ask your trusty music outlet when “Remy Shand” is available near you.

Go check out his solo single ‘Take A Message’ plus a couple of other tracks as well and his music video even, if you’ve RealPlayer that is, at his official website: www.remyshand.ca

On a personal note, I say Remy’s a dazzling debut indeed, recommended to fans of Maxwell, Erykah Badu or even Macy Gray. I’m going to go get my copy, that’s for sure.
